    Artist Credits:
Written, recorded and produced by Nexus in Dublin and Berlin from 2008-2009.

Thanks to all at The Centrifuge for the effort gone into the release. Thanks to the Dublin and Berlin crew who have supported every live show I’ve had for the past 4-5 years, you know who you are, you legends.

Thanks to Robin Lochmann and Frederik Poppenk for the massive work gone into the video. Also thanks to Shane T for his constant help, Mrs Jynx, Scrubber Fox, Vertical67 and Snelcomjon for their brilliant remixes.
And to everyone banging away in the Irish electronic music scene for the inspiration, the music, the ideas and the sessions.

    Other Info:

Sounds in this LP are basically a mash of everything I love about music, complete still-life ambience, distortion, elements of UK bass, techno structures, “sound art”, trip-hop and the odd amen. Silicone Poplars gets the title of the album because it has nearly all of these features crammed into one track.

UVB-76 is the callsign of a shortwave radio station nicknamed “The Buzzer” which broadcasts from a military facility in Povarovo, Russia. It has been actively broadcasting a repeated buzzing noise which has been monitored by hobbyists since 1982. You can hear samples of this buzzer through the track along with Radio Station Peace and Progress. There’s plenty of information, speculation, recordings and discussion about these stations, hundreds of other ‘number stations’ and Cold War paranoia littered throughout the internet – most relevantly to this track and this release is Carl Brown’s latest release The Carl Brown Album, also out on The Centrifuge.

    ARTIST PROFILES:

    DMX Krew LIVE (Rephlex, Breakin’)
    http://www.dmxkrew.com

Ed DMX lives in London where he makes music and runs his label Breakin’ Records. He also travels around DJing and performing live most weekends in different parts of the world.

The first DMX Krew release was 1995’s “Got You On My Mind” on Dutch label DAP, and this was followed in 1996 by “Sound Of The Street” on Aphex Twin’s label Rephlex. This record hinted at what was to come with its mix of instrumental electro, synthpop and techno made on vintage equipment. Lots more releases followed, mainly through Rephlex but also on diverse labels including International Deejay Gigolos, Ersatz Audio, Sonic Groove and several others. DMX Krew remixes have also appeared of various artists including Gentle People, Biochip C, Denki Groove, Le Car and many others.

In 1997 Ed DMX started his label Breakin’ Records which gained a cult following as one of the UK’s first electro and bass labels with releases from DMX Krew and under the alias Computor Rockers, as well as first signings Bass Junkie and Mandroid. Later Breakin’ branched into other sounds with the signing and debut releases of acid maestro Ceephax Acid Crew, and the synthpop of G. D. Luxxe. In 2000 as EDMX, Ed became one of the first non-Detroit artists to make and release Ghetto-style electro tunes on the successful MPC Trax series of 12″s and the sell-out mix CD Bass mix. Later Detroit artists Digitek, 313 Bass Mechanics and Disco D also released on Breakin’ / MPC Trax.

The last three albums and pair of 7″ singles released on Rephlex under the umbrella of “The Collapse Of The Wave Function” reveal a deeper, more considered side to his production, featuring ambient and experimental tracks as well as quirkier dancefloor fillers.

Ed has performed all around the world both as a DJ and as a live act, including several US tours with and without the Rephlex crew, most of western and northern Europe and a lot of eastern Europe too, numerous tours in Japan including WIRE99 in front of 8000 people with Derrick May and Denki Groove in the Yokohama Arena. In 2004 DMX Krew appeared for the first time in Australia and he continues to play out most weekends.

    Feldermelder LIVE (Spezialmaterial, Switzerland)
    http://www.feldermelder.ch
Feldermelder is the driving force behind the uber-cool Swiss electronica label Spezialmaterial and we have been trying to get him over to the UK for some time now. With a live set full of crisp beats, complex rhythms and intricate melodies, itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs no wonder that he can count Autechre, Team Doyobi, Plaid and many more of the worldรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs finest electronic musicians as collaborators and friends.

Scrubber Fox & DJ Stuff LIVE (The Centrifuge, UK) – 3D-AV SHOW!!
    http://www.myspace.com/thescrubberfoxspace
Hailing from the north of this fine isle, Scrubber Fox doesnรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt make it as far as London too often. Thatรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs a big shame, as he has been tearing up our 2009 shows with floor-filler acid rinseouts and tumbling breakbeats to our great pleasure. Not to worry, by popular request heรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs coming down to the big smoke with a totally fresh live setup that will leave heads scratched, feet raw and sweat dripping from the ceiling. Having released on Skam, Merck and now The Centrifuge, the heads know about Scrubber and itรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs time you did too. Joined by DJ Stuff for a London debut 3D-AV Scrubber disco!!

    Vertical67 LIVE (Acroplane, Germany)
    http://www.myspace.com/vertical67
Vertical67 is a lifelong Berliner. He started making electronic music around 1999, producing in many different styles. In general he makes some electronic music influenced by acid, jungle, psychedelia. So far he released 2 Albums on the mighty netlabel Acroplane Recordings and several other contributions to some compilations, remixes and the like. Expect some rave this evening.

    Nexus LIVE (The Centrifuge, Ireland)
    http://www.siliconepoplars.com/
Silicone Poplars/Nexus is a Dublin/Berlin-based composer and performer of sparse ambient electronica mixed with breakbeat, glitch and homemade electronics. Live sets usually include a homemade interface which tracks the movement of gameboy cartridges and chess pieces to control sound events. These homemade devices and interfaces have been on public display as interactive installations, but mostly play the part of instruments in live performances. — happy to have shared stages with Sunken Foal, Creator, Herv, DJ Scotch Egg, Miles Iwes, T-woc, Sarsparilla, Cignol, The Last Sound and to have been invited to perform at the Project Arts Centre, UCC, NUIM, Mantua, Life and Tweak Festival.

    Fractional LIVE (The Centrifuge, Belgium)
    http://www.myspace.com/tirofcnaal
Fractional is Eugenie. Her music can be qualified as brooding electronica with a jungle aftertaste. Pierre literally regurgitates his broken beats, waxing them with various bleeps and crackles, smearing mystical pads over them.

    Volitune LIVE (The Centrifuge, UK)
    http://www.myspace.com/volitune
Volitune is a new signing to The Centrifuge’s acid wing, having released on netlabels such as ARP in the past. Expect advanced melodies, 303 squelch and electro beat business.

    Ursa (The Centrifuge, Brap.FM)
    https://www.thecentrifuge.co.uk
Ursa has been part of The Centrifuge since near its inception, supporting the likes of Tim Exile, Scotch Egg, and Formication, as well as releasing on the netlabel. Resident in East London, he also hosts TheCentrifuge’s radio show on Brap.FM, writes for melodic jungle website www.itstooloud.com and can be found this summer playing alongside luminaries such as iTAL tEK.

    missaw (The Centrifuge)
    http://www.missaw.com
missaw is The Centrifugeรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs label curator & resident remixer, creating electronic concoctions for the body and the mind.

Sophomore release from the East Anglian wizard. Additional Notes from the artist:
Pharaonic Dusk Irdial : Many thanks to Robert A. Moog, for the sounds in this song especially, but in many others. Thanks to my parents for going to Egypt + buying a crappy Egyptian touristy thing , I don’t even know what it was, but it was in the bathroom when I went round + had the word “pharonic” (incorrectly spelt) on it. As always a massive UNthanks to Orion Platinum, for crashing so many times, I remade so many bits, eventually I gave up with some, and as a result, some bits might sound different to other bits, if you know what I mean. But this, at least, I can look back on as a problem of 2005, represented unwillingly in this song. (2009 edit – I’m still using it :P)

Old Tune: Jacob Solstice strums away on Guitar at 1:50 as instructed.

Safe Pt.3: I’m a fraud. I don’t know how I made this tune at all, I just know I played the keyboard + the tuning was all wrong. Still, I enjoy listening to it, so here it is.

Sad Kiss: Noises from a saucepan bought on a mundesley camping trip with Billie, Matthew and Lucy. Actually, it was meant to be an egg poacher, but all the other saucepans were 16 pounds or something, and this one was 3, and we only needed it for some noodles. Piano is Matthews one, recorded at Matthews, using Matthews minidisk player. Guitars: Olley Neale should be twiddling away on your left hand side, and Jacob Solstice on your right.

The Frub: An unedited solo played at 6am one morning in June. Except for the backwards notes + bell right at the end.

Propperchopper: penny whistle blowed into by me.

Become: Guitar, Jacob Solstice. There were going to be melodies in this tune by Gareth Clarke, but that only materialised in a tiny clip that I treasure.

Small Gl9ck Tune: glock bit by me.

Summer Breaks tune 3: Glock and “singing”/making noises by me (notice the painstaking audio engineering to give the illusion I’m singing in a small room into a ร‚ยฃ1.99 mic when it’s actually an AKG C12VR Multi Pick-up Tube Microphone in my multi-million pound professional studio). Guitars aplenty from Jacob Solstice.

Jazzydnb: chords based on/stolen from a tune I heard in the record shop soundclash once. Guitar riff by Olley Neale, Clarinet by me. But it would have been better if I hadn’t of broken the ligature the day I was going to record the part. And then the part took ages to come so I was probably all out of practise.yeah.

    Safe Pt.2: Another solo.

Kitano Meso: This tunes structure goes out of the window, oh well.

Fuck Offensive T-shirts: Starts as a Venetian Snares impression in acid pro. I’m not really sure what happens to it. Laughter by Me, Olley, and Billie, at various different times.

You may have noticed the many random numbers audible during the playing of this recording. These are from a quadruple disc collection called “The Conet Project” downloadable from www.archive.org. Or you can head to http://www.irdial.com/conet.htm to be set on the trail of finding out more about these fascinating “number stations”, and unbelievably you can actually buy the CDs of the thing you probably just downloaded for free – and even a T-shirt.

Released on Sunday 4th October 2009 at https://www.thecentrifuge.co.uk, free download.

Archive uber-glitch material from the multifaceted ‘Dr Nick’. Aside from his flourishing production and DJ career on a house/trance tip across Montreal, Berlin and soon to be Leeds, the globe-trotting Nick was also renowned as a audio programming guru and we are very pleased to have beaten the likes of Raster-Noton to releasing some highlights of his sound art output.

    ***ARTIST PROFILES****

    Ebola LIVE (Spectraliquid, Acroplane)
    http://www.myspace.com/ebolawrongmusic
Ebola is Wrong Music co-founder and all round gentleman Ben Hudson. He has taken his explosive “bass-oriented” live set all over the UK, Europe and beyond. Expect styles ranging from dubstep to dancehall, breakcore to booty-techno, crunk, grime, and all in between.

    NeuTek LIVE (The Centrifuge)
    https://www.thecentrifuge.co.uk
NeuTek is an Oslo-based electronic musician, software developer and programmer and returns to West London following a precision sonic demolition last summer. The fruits of his technical creativity yield expressive electronic music that transcends the myriad paradigms of electro, acid, ambient, rave, chiptunes, glitch and breakbeat.

    Mothboy LIVE (Ad Noiseam, Acroplane)
    http://www.myspace.com/simonmothboy
Mothboy is London-based Simon Smerdon. Starting as a bass player for hardcore and metal bands in his native Devon, he turned to electronic music after his move to London in 1996, forming Ocosi shortly thereafter. He then recorded two Cds with this band (one with Mick Harris of Scorn fame and one with Ad Noiseam band mate Horchata) before quitting the band in 1999. Mothboy was then born as Smerdonรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs main project. To date, as Mothboy his own inimitable style of hiphop and breaks on Acroplane Recordings, Ad Noiseam, Disco.r.dance and Ohm Resistance to critical acclaim.

Veqtor LIVE (The Centrifuge, OXO Unlimited)
    http://www.oxo-unlimited.com/
Swedenรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs Veqtor, curator of the OXO-Unlimited netlabel and all round hardware/software demon is jetting in for his first London show having wowed the crowds at the wonderful Norberg festival this summer. Expect inventive beats, max/msp-fuelled sonic explorations and dirty dub techno.

Filaria LIVE (Acroplane, Bug Klinik, Kinnego Flux)
    http://www.myspace.com/filaria
One of the resident Acroplane artists from it’s inception, Filaria has been wowing audiences with his live performances in Ireland for many years, but has also travelled extensively to perform, including being one of the main support acts for Bogdan Raczynski to over 5000 people in Belgium, and supporting Drop the Lime in New York. He is also known as one half of Kinnego Flux, who you may remember have recently released a collaboratory release with Boxcutter on his new Kinnego label. Dave also has a collab track on Boxcutter’s new ‘Arecibo Message’ LP.

    Oxynucid LIVE (The Centrifuge)
    https://www.thecentrifuge.co.uk
A classically-trained musician with golden fingers, Oxynucid aka Dominick Schofield is fast making a name for himself in electronic music. Having spent 10 years playing keys in an electro-indie band that made it big, he left to pursue his solo career. Barely moments later, he signed to The Centrifuge and has released a string of acclaimed EPs and tracks, combining his electro tendencies and braindance influences to shape wondrous pieces of lush melodic electronics. You arenรขโ‚ฌโ„ขt gonna see too many reel-to-reel players and Korg MS-10s on stage either รขโ‚ฌโ€œ live electronics can be real, and Oxynucidรขโ‚ฌโ„ขs sets have been the highlight of many a Centrifuge show.

    Red Box Recorder LIVE (Acroplane)
    http://www.myspace.com/djparticlefusion
Still only a relative youngster in the scene, Red Box Recorder’s 2 LPs on Acroplane Recordings have been among the labels most well received releases. His recent Colour Codes LP title says it all; here is a woven rainbow of elastic sounds and beats that displays a confidence uncommon for an artist with only one previous album to hoist. This Ginglik show will be only his 2nd live performance, and we foresee that it will be something very special indeed.`

    Unit Cell LIVE (The Centrifuge)
    http://www.myspace.com/unitcell
Supersaturated melodies and metastable bass lines combine with the blips of nucleation and brass of solubility to permit Unit Cell formation under the correct chemical conditions.

    DJ Acroplane Recordings
    http://www.acroplane.org
The main man behind the Acroplane label, Paul has also been a professional DJ in Ireland for many years, having supported acts as diverse as Autechre, Scorn, Luke Vibert, Si Begg, Kevin Saunderson and Hellfish, amongst dozens of other household names. In his DJ Acroplane Recordings guise expect a mixture of new and old music from the label, mixed up with other music that he considers influential to its output.

    missaw (The Centrifuge)
    http://www.missaw.com
missaw is The Centrifuge’s label curator & resident remixer, creating electronic concoctions for the body and the mind.

    VJ the SuRReaLaRTiST (Ginglik)
    http://www.myspace.com/surrealartistvj
GINGLIK’s resident VJ the SuRReaLaRTiST pushes the boundaries of live clubland visuals every week @ TECHLIKS. Turning the beats into light, colour and shape means that your dance floor experience is truly a multi-sensory one. Mixing an eye popping blend of tough graphics, cult films, timelapse, CGI, lasers, stop-frame animation, surrealism & abstraction; all with a bit of dark humour thrown in there for good measure. Your retinas won’t know what to do with themselves!

[CF029] Yellow Then Blue – Tosche Station EP

Released August 16th 2009 at https://www.thecentrifuge.co.uk, free download.

A retroprogressive style EP. Electronica ripened under the California sun.

Tosche Station is an album based on using the Yamaha QY70 hardware sequencer. While listening to some particularly challenging and tech savvy music I realized that some of the most forward thinking music, and some of my favorite albums, were made before music making on computers became the norm. People had to push the limits of what their hardware could produce to realize the sounds in their heads. This album is an effort to pay homage to these early pioneers.
