The Centrifuge returns to London after a half-year hiatus from club nights, in which time they have taken their quirky brand of challenging yet accessible live electronic music to the global stage. Having upped sticks and moved HQ to Berlin at the start of 2010, the good word has been spreading far and wide. Now they are back in their old stomping ground with nothing less than a stellar lineup to celebrate the climax and finale of WISP’s first European Tour of the new decade.

And what a decade it is shaping up to be for WISP! Hailing from Niagra Falls in the USA, his profile exploded last year after his first two highly-anticipated albums for Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label emerged, revealing new electro/techno influences to his sound that is tweaked to move feet, tickle minds and break hearts on the dancefloor. 2009 also saw 2 huge UK shows with Aphex Twin and a North American tour with Venetian Snares, both of which are amongst his biggest fans. Come and see what the fuss is about!

As if that wasn’t enough, we have another FOUR (count ’em!) live acts in support of Wisp. RIVAL CONSOLES makes the first appearance of many under The Centrifuge’s banner, bringing his ultra-catchy synth lines and funked-up drum machine workouts. A true star in the making. MRS JYNX touches down from Manchester with her timeless take on pastoral electronica, retro-electro melody wizard OXYNUCID is exlusively road testing this summer’s festival live set and ROTODRONE plays his first-ever live show, previewing his amazing new album forthcoming on The Centrifuge. missaw provides DJ support for the main attractions.

In Room 2, the ever-excellent electronic music blog null+void present a lineup bridging the gap between electro, acid, dubstep and drum’n’bass with Militant Science head honcho PAUL BLACKFORD and SCRASE performing live alongside hardware fiend TUDOR ACID and DJs Ursa and Kiersty.

Room 3 is hosted by Neon Skullz & Pollinate Records…Bad bwoy tribalmashupbashment. Japanese dubtronic genius duo DOKKEBI Q lay down a tasty headline show just before their debut album is released! THIS ROOM IS: global ghetto beats slashed, smashed and slammed against fuck off ragga-tronics and blistering bassline bubblers!

    See you down the front!

    Terrificolor on Myspace:
    http://www.myspace.com/terrificolor

An attraction to the extremes of music, sound synthesis and dolphins has led Terrificolor (Fabien) to the sound of breakcore and drill and bass. He used to play the guitar in grindcore bands, but the lure of sole control over his creative output led him to electronic music production.

“3” is the second EP from Terrificolor – “Murphi” being the first – which combines vintage (MKS 80, Juno,Trident, TR etc) and modern sounds (Andromeda, Elektron MD, reaktor…) into a rollercoaster trip through a deranged bastard child of breakcore, hardware and electronica.

All the tracks on this record have been composed and mixed by Terrificolor except “Délicieuse enfant” composed by Terrificolor & Rectom and “Sonofox opiates” which is a remix of “Sonata Op 111” composed and mixed by Scrubber Fox.

The principle of Terrificolor’s music is to shape the random and to use opposition, contrast and movements.

  • The Centrifuge 2009 Roundup Pt 2: Label

Festive greetz from The Centrifuge HQ to one and all. In part 2 of our 2009 roundup we’re going to take a look back at the music that we released over the year. Not to be outdone by our prolific events activity (which we talked about yesterday), we published no less than 30 digital releases using a Creative Commons license, one double album compilation available in return for a charity donation (which are still very welcome in case you have some surplus festive funds), a vinyl issue of CF018 and a mountain of CDs.

We’ve picked up a few plaudits for some of the releases: Fractional has been nominated for a Qwartz award for Tasnw from Still Life, Anyone Can Make Dubstep was named album of the year by a bass-centric netaudio roundup and The Centrifuge & Acroplane’s alliance went from strength to strength as the two of us took the top 2 spots in influential Japanese music blog Music Forest‘s netlabels of 2009. Mark Swift‘s sublime Melodynonstop series also picked up a top 5 album spot in the same writeup.

To round the year off, we released a compilation in tandem with our buddies at Acroplane Recordings as a celebration of Netaudio in 2009. Hope you enjoy it! Streaming previews are below…

  • The Centrifuge 2009 Roundup Pt 1: Events

    cf-logo-xmas

Ahoy there! It’s Christmas eve, the UK’s roads are iced up and locked down, the goose is getting fat and we’re all feeling festive…aren’t we? Well regardless of that, the end of the year and indeed the decade are upon us and we thought it’d be nice to reflect on the past twelve months in The Centriverse.

So today…events. I guess you’ll have noticed we’ve been rather busy this year, with our crew being heavily involved in happenings as diverse as lectures, seminars, street raves, free parties, bar gigs, club nights and warehouse raves all over the UK and of course we recently broke into the Berlin scene. It would be folly to actually count them all, doubtful my maths skills would be up to it but instead here’s a quick look back at some of the bigguns 🙂

Why not reply with your favourite moments? I’ll kick off with a few: raising a big pot of cash for charity in September, Team Doyobi’s amazing retro-future workout and Wisp’s album launch show at Ginglik, Richard Devine’s precision sonic demolition of Corsica Studios and last but not least dancing with aliens at Tacheles in Berlin. The FutureSonic street raves were pretty special too 😀

    Photos here by the way…

more roundup goodness to come, i’m off to thaw my hands by the fire.

    Additional Notes From The Artist:

ENGLISH Instant Classic, also called Selected Unknown Abstract Drill And Bass Instant Classic, brings together the 9 pieces composed by Joel-Aimé between 2001 and 2004 in parallel with his studies in Electroacoustic Composition at the Montreal Conservatory.

    Tracklist:

    – Hello, My Name Is Joel-Aimé (2003) An experiment in polyrhythmy, where the rhythm section stays at a constant tempo while the melody slows down or speeds up, gradually or suddenly, and all of it with a carnival atmosphere.

    – L’Eclectively Quick Dance Mix Vol.1 (2003) A humorous reminiscence of dance music from the first half of the 90s.

    – Cheap Shot (2002) I was paid $20 to do this remix of a children’s TV show theme.

    – Buddy Rush (2002) Composition based on a 12-minute recording of Buddy Rich compressed to 45 seconds using a high speed CD player. This was my first assignment using PropellerHead Reason at the Montreal Conservatory.

    – Fruity Looped (2003) Composed over 4 months at the rate of 4 bars per evening after class, Fruity Looped is an homage to the repulsive library samples of FLStudio 3 such as the horrible Plunk, the disgraceful TS404, the seductive but clumsy Hip Hop Drum Kit and the infamous 3OSC.

    – L’Eclectively Quick Danse Mix Vol.2 (2003) A humorous reminiscence of trance music from the first half of the 90s. – Abstract Drum And Bass Classic (2004) Drum, bass and melody with the stereotypical snares of the second half of the 90s. Twisted and efficient.

    – Electric Block Brick (2002) There was meant to be a violin part in here… but when I played it to the violinist in the studio, he ran away…

    – Joel-Aimé au pays des chinois (2004) (Joel-Aimé in the land of the Chinese) Composed using samples of Vietnamese restaurant music.

    2 Bonus Tracks

    – Super Mario Making Love To Peach (Happy End Mix) (2005) A reprise of the star song from Super Mario Bros. – Drum Kit Orgy (2005) A straight abstract drum and bass track, so as to stay on form, in this beautiful autumn afternoon, being as commissions in this genre are increasingly rare. The main theme is a permutation of the song “My Favourite Things”.

    Release Notes:
For Myoptik’s 3rd Centrifuge EP we have something a little different. Where the first two EPs gave a vague nod to accepted electronic forms (albeit through a mangle of madness), this time we have a diverse range of narratives from an obtuse mind. The artist’s intention here is to question accepted styles, presenting an attitude from beyond and without. There are half a dozen audio slices celebrating the fertility of limitation and the prospect of future limitlessness. It’s all about irreverent audio stimulation with a message of vitality: music that shows a tenacious thirst for life with stupid combinations that help to question, to open up towards the unknown future.
Included remixes from Shrimpsalad and Data Out give a window into what it would be like if Myoptik wasn’t so awkward and obtuse. Where he puts familiar sounds into confused and unfamiliar settings, the remixers pull them back from the brink so you can grab them with both hands. So come, take your gloves off, dive in…
