    /////

Quite a last-minute show so please help us to spread the word! The Centrifuge Agency is delighted to be welcoming the critically-acclaimed Orcas for their first ever London show, fresh from the release of their widely praised debut album on Morr Music. This will be a very special evening with both band members, each respected and established in their own right, also performing solo sets.

Seattle’s post-minimalist composer Rafael Anton Irisarri plays his only solo UK show this year and Michigan’s Benoît Pioulard returns to London after recently enchanting a full house at Cafe OTO with his unique guitar and vocal explorations. Be prepared for an evening of Pacific Northwestern experimental guitar music, avant-folk songcraft and symphonic neo-classical ambience.

    Orcas

    Interview with Vice’s Noisey Magazine

Album of the week on Boomkat April 2012

Orcas is a new band by haze-pop auteur Benoît Pioulard and post-minimalist composer Rafael Anton Irisarri. Theirs is a style deeply rooted in personal variations on songform and ambient craft, and as a duo they bridge the furthest outlying aspects of their previous solo works.

“This type of collaboration between experimental pop musicians can too often devolve into aimless fancywork and tech shenanigans, but Meluch and Irisarri have crafted a genuine, coherent album that conjures immense shadows and immense depths worthy of its namesake.” – Pitchfork Music.

    /////

    Rafael Anton Irisarri

“Irisarri embodies the hybrid genre…the new kind of composer, who exists in an undifferentiated welter of pop, techno, and classical.” – Pitchfork (USA)

Rafael Anton Irisarri is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, curator, producer and interdisciplinary artist. He is predominantly associated with post-minimalist, drone and ambient music and has been exploring textural electronics for over half a decade. Irisarri’s recorded output captures an essential vision of floating tones, deep pulsing bass and textured Gaussian curves. His use of ostinato phrases taps into minimalist ideals, whilst his use of atmospheric layers of reverb suggests a more cinematic quality. In all, Irisarri’s compositions are deeply emotive and epic to the point of being symphonic.

He is also known as the main member of electronic shoegaze act The Sight Below, and one half of the critically-acclaimed new duo Orcas with…

    /////

    Benoît Pioulard

Since a young age, Michigan resident Thomas Meluch has been fascinated with the sounds of nature and tape decay—through almost a decade of recordings, he has fostered an infatuation with a sort of sonic density that combines remnants of pop song structures with the lushness and unpredictability of field recordings. A veteran drummer of a half dozen bands, Meluch chose guitar and voice as the primary instruments for his work as Benoît Pioulard. He began documenting field recordings and his own lo-fi compositions on dictaphones, discarded stereos and four-track machines in the mid 1990s, later focusing on highly limited CD-R and cassette releases of his experimental, folk-influenced songs for friends and family.

    Ed Chamberlain
    http://soundcloud.com/ed-chamberlain

BaseLogic founder member Edmund Chamberlain, preternaturally gifted composer and awkward gentleman, refused to commit his live sound to vinyl for many years and remained a shadowy figure despite calls from such luminaries as John Peel to come in from the cold and tell us what the deuce he was about. After years of tense negotiation, the three part ”Fixxy” series was prised from his white knuckles and unleashed on the world.

It went down like a spoon at a jam festival. The reaction was so overwhelming everyone had to sit down, and when no-one was looking Surgeon, Vent and Ochre did some remixes and the ”Mixxy” series was born. Stay tuned for further developments from Ed, as no-one can be quite sure what, if anything, will happen next.

    ————
The Centrifuge returns to its occasional midweek residency at The MacBeth for an diverse evening of live electronic music. Having burst the walls with DMX KREW and BOGDAN “COLESLAW” RACZYNSKI and then swiftly followed with RADIOACTIVE MAN, THE DOUBTFUL GUEST and TUDOR ACID at the start of the summer, the benchmark has been set. Now that things are chilling down in the capital its time to get down and dirty with the uncompromising electro-drill of MONSTER X, DEAD FADER’S bass led noise, RIVAL CONSOLES’ avant pop, GARETH CLARKE’S advanced electronics and VOLITUNE’S funky acid. All that for three quid? You better believe it!

    MONSTER X
Professional radio / tv sound designer by day, electro-breakcore mentalist by night, this smiling misfit has caused so much recent mayhem in his hometown of Grenoble (France), that only London could take him. Since arriving here, he’s already torn up all four corners of the city and events all across Europe. Remember his show-stopping performance at Glade 2009? If not, check this – it was the highlight of our weekend!

    DEAD FADER
Dead Fader make heavy electronic bass/noise music, specializing in nasty sounds and nasty distortion. Currently signed to Cloaks label 3BY3, they released their debut album, Corrupt My Examiner, in April 2010 to critical acclaim. They are one of the few acts to successfully merge dubstep with heavy industrial sounds and make it work on the dancefloor. They never fail to impress when performing live and are possibly the loudest electronic live act ever known!

    http://agency.thecentrifuge.co.uk/dead-fader/

    RIVAL CONSOLES
With his highly anticipated debut album IO released on Erased Tapes Records in 2009, West crafted an electronic record to transcend the discerning and flirt a little with the club culture. With rave reviews from XLR8R, NME, DJ Mag, The Milk Factory, Musikexpress the arrival of a new talent on the scene was heralded, and the buzz has been building yet more. Now primed to deliver his second studio opus this Winter, his sound has taken on another dimension as the cutting edge marries with his pop sensibilities.

    http://agency.thecentrifuge.co.uk/rival-consoles/

    GARETH CLARKE
The word ‘genius’ has been used to describe Gareth Clarke a few too many times for it to be simply hyperbole. Taking his cue from lush textural melodic electronics and the intensity of post-DSP drill’n’bass his heady mix of intricate sonics provide the perfect pleasure amalgam for body and brain. Stay tuned for new album announcement soon…

The Centrifuge returns to London after a half-year hiatus from club nights, in which time they have taken their quirky brand of challenging yet accessible live electronic music to the global stage. Having upped sticks and moved HQ to Berlin at the start of 2010, the good word has been spreading far and wide. Now they are back in their old stomping ground with nothing less than a stellar lineup to celebrate the climax and finale of WISP’s first European Tour of the new decade.

And what a decade it is shaping up to be for WISP! Hailing from Niagra Falls in the USA, his profile exploded last year after his first two highly-anticipated albums for Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label emerged, revealing new electro/techno influences to his sound that is tweaked to move feet, tickle minds and break hearts on the dancefloor. 2009 also saw 2 huge UK shows with Aphex Twin and a North American tour with Venetian Snares, both of which are amongst his biggest fans. Come and see what the fuss is about!

As if that wasn’t enough, we have another FOUR (count ’em!) live acts in support of Wisp. RIVAL CONSOLES makes the first appearance of many under The Centrifuge’s banner, bringing his ultra-catchy synth lines and funked-up drum machine workouts. A true star in the making. MRS JYNX touches down from Manchester with her timeless take on pastoral electronica, retro-electro melody wizard OXYNUCID is exlusively road testing this summer’s festival live set and ROTODRONE plays his first-ever live show, previewing his amazing new album forthcoming on The Centrifuge. missaw provides DJ support for the main attractions.

In Room 2, the ever-excellent electronic music blog null+void present a lineup bridging the gap between electro, acid, dubstep and drum’n’bass with Militant Science head honcho PAUL BLACKFORD and SCRASE performing live alongside hardware fiend TUDOR ACID and DJs Ursa and Kiersty.

Room 3 is hosted by Neon Skullz & Pollinate Records…Bad bwoy tribalmashupbashment. Japanese dubtronic genius duo DOKKEBI Q lay down a tasty headline show just before their debut album is released! THIS ROOM IS: global ghetto beats slashed, smashed and slammed against fuck off ragga-tronics and blistering bassline bubblers!

  • The Centrifuge 2009 Roundup Pt 1: Events

    cf-logo-xmas

Ahoy there! It’s Christmas eve, the UK’s roads are iced up and locked down, the goose is getting fat and we’re all feeling festive…aren’t we? Well regardless of that, the end of the year and indeed the decade are upon us and we thought it’d be nice to reflect on the past twelve months in The Centriverse.

So today…events. I guess you’ll have noticed we’ve been rather busy this year, with our crew being heavily involved in happenings as diverse as lectures, seminars, street raves, free parties, bar gigs, club nights and warehouse raves all over the UK and of course we recently broke into the Berlin scene. It would be folly to actually count them all, doubtful my maths skills would be up to it but instead here’s a quick look back at some of the bigguns 🙂

Why not reply with your favourite moments? I’ll kick off with a few: raising a big pot of cash for charity in September, Team Doyobi’s amazing retro-future workout and Wisp’s album launch show at Ginglik, Richard Devine’s precision sonic demolition of Corsica Studios and last but not least dancing with aliens at Tacheles in Berlin. The FutureSonic street raves were pretty special too 😀

    Photos here by the way…

more roundup goodness to come, i’m off to thaw my hands by the fire.

    ARTIST PROFILES:

    DMX Krew LIVE (Rephlex, Breakin’)
    http://www.dmxkrew.com

Ed DMX lives in London where he makes music and runs his label Breakin’ Records. He also travels around DJing and performing live most weekends in different parts of the world.

The first DMX Krew release was 1995’s “Got You On My Mind” on Dutch label DAP, and this was followed in 1996 by “Sound Of The Street” on Aphex Twin’s label Rephlex. This record hinted at what was to come with its mix of instrumental electro, synthpop and techno made on vintage equipment. Lots more releases followed, mainly through Rephlex but also on diverse labels including International Deejay Gigolos, Ersatz Audio, Sonic Groove and several others. DMX Krew remixes have also appeared of various artists including Gentle People, Biochip C, Denki Groove, Le Car and many others.

In 1997 Ed DMX started his label Breakin’ Records which gained a cult following as one of the UK’s first electro and bass labels with releases from DMX Krew and under the alias Computor Rockers, as well as first signings Bass Junkie and Mandroid. Later Breakin’ branched into other sounds with the signing and debut releases of acid maestro Ceephax Acid Crew, and the synthpop of G. D. Luxxe. In 2000 as EDMX, Ed became one of the first non-Detroit artists to make and release Ghetto-style electro tunes on the successful MPC Trax series of 12″s and the sell-out mix CD Bass mix. Later Detroit artists Digitek, 313 Bass Mechanics and Disco D also released on Breakin’ / MPC Trax.

The last three albums and pair of 7″ singles released on Rephlex under the umbrella of “The Collapse Of The Wave Function” reveal a deeper, more considered side to his production, featuring ambient and experimental tracks as well as quirkier dancefloor fillers.

Ed has performed all around the world both as a DJ and as a live act, including several US tours with and without the Rephlex crew, most of western and northern Europe and a lot of eastern Europe too, numerous tours in Japan including WIRE99 in front of 8000 people with Derrick May and Denki Groove in the Yokohama Arena. In 2004 DMX Krew appeared for the first time in Australia and he continues to play out most weekends.

    Feldermelder LIVE (Spezialmaterial, Switzerland)
    http://www.feldermelder.ch
Feldermelder is the driving force behind the uber-cool Swiss electronica label Spezialmaterial and we have been trying to get him over to the UK for some time now. With a live set full of crisp beats, complex rhythms and intricate melodies, it’s no wonder that he can count Autechre, Team Doyobi, Plaid and many more of the world’s finest electronic musicians as collaborators and friends.

Scrubber Fox & DJ Stuff LIVE (The Centrifuge, UK) – 3D-AV SHOW!!
    http://www.myspace.com/thescrubberfoxspace
Hailing from the north of this fine isle, Scrubber Fox doesn’t make it as far as London too often. That’s a big shame, as he has been tearing up our 2009 shows with floor-filler acid rinseouts and tumbling breakbeats to our great pleasure. Not to worry, by popular request he’s coming down to the big smoke with a totally fresh live setup that will leave heads scratched, feet raw and sweat dripping from the ceiling. Having released on Skam, Merck and now The Centrifuge, the heads know about Scrubber and it’s time you did too. Joined by DJ Stuff for a London debut 3D-AV Scrubber disco!!

    Vertical67 LIVE (Acroplane, Germany)
    http://www.myspace.com/vertical67
Vertical67 is a lifelong Berliner. He started making electronic music around 1999, producing in many different styles. In general he makes some electronic music influenced by acid, jungle, psychedelia. So far he released 2 Albums on the mighty netlabel Acroplane Recordings and several other contributions to some compilations, remixes and the like. Expect some rave this evening.

    Nexus LIVE (The Centrifuge, Ireland)
    http://www.siliconepoplars.com/
Silicone Poplars/Nexus is a Dublin/Berlin-based composer and performer of sparse ambient electronica mixed with breakbeat, glitch and homemade electronics. Live sets usually include a homemade interface which tracks the movement of gameboy cartridges and chess pieces to control sound events. These homemade devices and interfaces have been on public display as interactive installations, but mostly play the part of instruments in live performances. — happy to have shared stages with Sunken Foal, Creator, Herv, DJ Scotch Egg, Miles Iwes, T-woc, Sarsparilla, Cignol, The Last Sound and to have been invited to perform at the Project Arts Centre, UCC, NUIM, Mantua, Life and Tweak Festival.

    Fractional LIVE (The Centrifuge, Belgium)
    http://www.myspace.com/tirofcnaal
Fractional is Eugenie. Her music can be qualified as brooding electronica with a jungle aftertaste. Pierre literally regurgitates his broken beats, waxing them with various bleeps and crackles, smearing mystical pads over them.

    Volitune LIVE (The Centrifuge, UK)
    http://www.myspace.com/volitune
Volitune is a new signing to The Centrifuge’s acid wing, having released on netlabels such as ARP in the past. Expect advanced melodies, 303 squelch and electro beat business.

    Ursa (The Centrifuge, Brap.FM)
    https://www.thecentrifuge.co.uk
Ursa has been part of The Centrifuge since near its inception, supporting the likes of Tim Exile, Scotch Egg, and Formication, as well as releasing on the netlabel. Resident in East London, he also hosts TheCentrifuge’s radio show on Brap.FM, writes for melodic jungle website www.itstooloud.com and can be found this summer playing alongside luminaries such as iTAL tEK.

    missaw (The Centrifuge)
    http://www.missaw.com

  • Support Us If You Can!

As you might have guessed, running a free label and non-commercial events isn’t exactly a shortcut to a pot of gold, quite the opposite in fact. So if you like what we do, and can spare a little bit of cash it would make all the difference to us! We want to keep releasing music for free, we believe that open-source music is one of the best ways forward to revitalise the music industry, especially in a less commercial scene such as experimental electronic music. Any help you can give is appreciated, whether its spreading the word about our releases and events, coming down to our shows and saying hello or cold, hard, sweet cash.

As a token of our appreciation, if you can donate over £5 (UK peeps) or over £10 (EU/Rest of World), and give us your postal address, we’ll send you a mixture of exclusive digital and real-world goodies that can’t be gotten at any other way. Can’t say fairer than that huh??
