  • The Centrifuge Radio Show – TONIGHT – Exclusive Guest mix from IJO (Blikmusik, Plain Audio, Sutemos)

IJOThis week we’ve a guest mix from Lithuanian IJO (pronounced ee-yo, just so you know). His album ‘Delay Preform’ on Blikmusik has been one of my favourites over the last few months, and he’s put together a collection of out there, glitched up, yet melody driven tracks for us. An hour of his own material featuring tracks from Delay Preform, his other releases on Bit-Phalanx, Plain Audio and Sutemos, and some unreleased material.

In addition, we’ve music from the new Brian Eno lp, Somatic Responses, 505, Posthuman, Sileni, Distance, Skeptikal, Jilk, Becoming Real, and more…

  • [MALTA] 19/02/11 The Centrifuge 4th Birthday with GLOBAL GOON / RIVAL CONSOLES / KILL REF / QUIP / MISSAW

[MALTA] 19/02/11 The Centrifuge 4th Birthday: GLOBAL GOON / RIVAL CONSOLES / KILL REF / QUIP / MISSAW / CSS RESIDENTS

Saturday 19th February 22:00 till late / 15 Euro on the door
Liquid Club, Limits of San Gwann, Malta

Global Goon (Rephlex, Planet Mu – UK)
Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes – UK)
    Kill Ref (Labyrinth – IT)
    Quip (STFU – UK)
    missaw (The Centrifuge – DE)
CSS Residents (Complex Sound Sagacity – MT)

Oh, to be 4 years old. In human years we’re a diminutive malevolent skinbag filled with blood, crap and bile. In Centrifuge years we’ve been fortunate enough to spawn a wee spinning machine that has organised some notorious parties around the UK and Europe, runs a fortnightly radio show, operates a growing family of digital labels and an artist agency. It’s been a busy time for us and it feels like time to celebrate!

We’ve decided to make quite a big deal out of this one, so we’ve assembled a killer team of live cadets who are heading to our new favourite place – the mediterrenean island of Malta – as we team up with the Complex Sound Sagacity crew for a BIG BAD ACID RAVEUP at Liquid Club.

Top of the list is Rephlex and Planet Mu’s legendary acidmeister GLOBAL GOON, bringing his filthiest 303 lines and tweaked up variants of techno, electro and breakbeat ahead of his performance at Bloc Weekend. London’s RIVAL CONSOLES fuses electro, pop and IDM and twists them into pulsating megaliths of percussion and melody. With his second album on the luminous Erased Tapes Records on the horizon, you’ll get to see what all the fuss is soon going to be about. KILL REF is our Roman acid and techno guru, with a impressive discography and the sweat of most European cities spilled to his electrifying sets. Leeds’ QUIP is packing a hardware punch, playing electro and techno with a twisted attitude to pitch and rhythm. No stranger to Malta, MISSAW will play a special anniversary DJ set taking in some of the music that has shaped the past 12 months for The Centrifuge.

    ————

    GLOBAL GOON
According to his press bio, Global Goon’s Johnny Hawk is a former shepherd from Liverpool who earned a recording contract after moving to London and rooming with Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) for a time. Hawk had worked in the capital for a multimedia company while making music on the side; after moving into a shared house with James, he released his first album Goon on Rephlex in 1996. Rumors that Goon actually was Aphex Twin persisted even after the release of Cradle of History 4 years later.

Planet Mu / We Me Records Syntheme project is a recognised alias of Global Goon and his recent live / DJ performances exhibit his tweaked-up take on acid house, techno and disco.

    RIVAL CONSOLES
Born in the winter of 1985, Ryan Lee West grew up in the small city of Leicester in the midlands of England. Fascinated by sound from an early age, Ryan chose to dedicate his time to studying, experimenting with and producing sound at De Montfort University Leicester before relocating to London. West strives to humanise and at the same time emphasise entirely computerised sounds to defy categorisation in modern electronic music. Rival Consoles combines a clever and complex mix of hard-hitting beats with catchy acid melodies.

Or as he describes it in his own words: ‘Rival Consoles is a musical project where I take ideas which are cheap and processed, and combine them with rich, unpredictable patterns – resulting in music which appears commercial yet typically against commercial music at the same time.’

    KILL REF
Kill Ref, born as Alessandro Signore, started his own musical path in the early 1994 DJing at several small independent techno parties located between Rome and Naples. His sound has always straightaway pointed out his natural suitability for an avantagarded style such both regarding Autechre’s And Aphex Twin’s visionary rhythmic choices, the strong heirlooms of Mills’ and Hood’s Detroit techno, the Rotterdam ravish hardtouch, the industrial echoes of the early Nitzer Ebb and Front242. Actually more regardless of any time signature, KR can inspire people both moving and travelling through an ecstatic obsessive dance: that’s the simplest and then purest meaning of the complexshaped language inside his dancefloor appeal. The everlasting love for the industrial landscapes and ruins and then the growing dark influence affecting his hybrid productions can let KR glaringly be considered as the “industrial-techno forerunner married with an electronic glitching, drilling hyperuranium”.

    QUIP
Experiments in small suburban bedroom, playing guitar in a punk band, classical guitar, show band, making tracks with a one second sampler, getting my first PC and rinsing the Soundblaster card, working to pay for equipment, making tracks on trains, in basements and in peoples houses, more bands, loss of my music partner, learning how to write tunes, recording the guitar, making sounds with the guitar that doesn’t sound like the guitar, working as a sound engineer, doing lots of gigs, working to pay for equipment, moving house, splitting up with long term girlfriend, making more music, releasing music for I Can Count, Hippocamp, more gigs, working with STFU collective, teaching music technology, moving house, making more music, working to pay for equipment, joining some more bands, doing some music for The Centrifuge and Inaudible Answer, making music for TV and film, doing more gigs….

  • The Centrifuge Radio Show – TONIGHT – with an exclusive interview with Macc & dgoHn (Rephlex, Subtle Audio)

Robert ‘Macc’ Maccioci & John ‘dgoHn’ Cunnane have a fine back catalogue of solo work – twisted drum workouts and heavy bass abound, with fans including Aphex Twin. Their recent LP ‘Some Shit Saaink’ on Subtle Audio has been one of my favourite releases of the last year, and to celebrate the release of the Rephlex-licenced CD, I cornered the boys for an evening’s chat in an East London boozer. I was looking forward to the interview for a long time, and the boys didn’t disappoint. Alongside the chatter, there’s a selection of tunes from the album and previous releases, and in addition we’ve the usual host of new music, including tracks from the forthcoming Cursor Miner LP ‘ Requires Attention’, new material from Scorn, Kelpe, and Hurtdeer and new releases from Jimmy Edgar, Sepalcure, James Blake, Pangaea and more.

I’ve really enjoyed listening to it this week, and i’m intrigued to see what the chatroom think…

    ————
The Centrifuge returns to its occasional midweek residency at The MacBeth for an diverse evening of live electronic music. Having burst the walls with DMX KREW and BOGDAN “COLESLAW” RACZYNSKI and then swiftly followed with RADIOACTIVE MAN, THE DOUBTFUL GUEST and TUDOR ACID at the start of the summer, the benchmark has been set. Now that things are chilling down in the capital its time to get down and dirty with the uncompromising electro-drill of MONSTER X, DEAD FADER’S bass led noise, RIVAL CONSOLES’ avant pop, GARETH CLARKE’S advanced electronics and VOLITUNE’S funky acid. All that for three quid? You better believe it!

    MONSTER X
Professional radio / tv sound designer by day, electro-breakcore mentalist by night, this smiling misfit has caused so much recent mayhem in his hometown of Grenoble (France), that only London could take him. Since arriving here, he’s already torn up all four corners of the city and events all across Europe. Remember his show-stopping performance at Glade 2009? If not, check this – it was the highlight of our weekend!

    http://agency.thecentrifuge.co.uk/monster-x/

    DEAD FADER
Dead Fader make heavy electronic bass/noise music, specializing in nasty sounds and nasty distortion. Currently signed to Cloaks label 3BY3, they released their debut album, Corrupt My Examiner, in April 2010 to critical acclaim. They are one of the few acts to successfully merge dubstep with heavy industrial sounds and make it work on the dancefloor. They never fail to impress when performing live and are possibly the loudest electronic live act ever known!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tz8ZFba1Ags
    http://agency.thecentrifuge.co.uk/dead-fader/

    RIVAL CONSOLES
With his highly anticipated debut album IO released on Erased Tapes Records in 2009, West crafted an electronic record to transcend the discerning and flirt a little with the club culture. With rave reviews from XLR8R, NME, DJ Mag, The Milk Factory, Musikexpress the arrival of a new talent on the scene was heralded, and the buzz has been building yet more. Now primed to deliver his second studio opus this Winter, his sound has taken on another dimension as the cutting edge marries with his pop sensibilities.

    http://agency.thecentrifuge.co.uk/rival-consoles/

    GARETH CLARKE
The word ‘genius’ has been used to describe Gareth Clarke a few too many times for it to be simply hyperbole. Taking his cue from lush textural melodic electronics and the intensity of post-DSP drill’n’bass his heady mix of intricate sonics provide the perfect pleasure amalgam for body and brain. Stay tuned for new album announcement soon…

The Centrifuge label & agency showcase mix for Electronic Explorations.

Compiled by missaw in Berlin, June 2010.

The Centrifuge is a global artist collective interested in all forms of experimental and electronic music. It was formed in early 2007 by missaw and NeuteK whilst residing in Nottingham, UK. At the start it was just those two playing once a month in the back room of the now defunct Blueprint Nightclub.

missaw would play some nice tunes and NeuteK would play a tracker liveset, or live coding, or maybe hacking dance mat software to make people fall over. Simple times. Captain Chaos and Sadistician of sister label Braincore Recordings also got involved and things were fun if a little inconsequential.

Then the club got closed down, and we decided to organise events in places like London, Manchester, Leeds, Malta and Berlin. We started our free digital label in June 2008 and have put out 50 releases thus far, with approximately 100k downloads to date. 2010 has been a busy year for The Centrifuge so far, as the label HQ relocation to Berlin in January was accompanied by the announcement of an artist management & booking agency and a significant roster expansion.

Gareth Clarke – New Album Soon
Gareth Clarke is available for live sets. Enquiries to agency@thecentrifuge.co.uk
Scheme Boy – Ruff and Tumble

Scheme Boy is available for live and DJ sets. Enquiries to agency@thecentrifuge.co.uk.
Scheme Boy is a stalwart of the London electronica and breakcore landscapes, having had a hand in many of the best happenings in the capital over the past decade. Never one for sticking to any one style, a Scheme Boy set could take you through a variety of genres, tempos and sonic tapestries whilst never forgetting to keep you grooving along. Although the back catalogue of his releases would indicate a hardcore/breakcore artist (albeit a melodic one), its on the dancefloor that you’ll experience the full spectrum of his sound which covers IDM, wonky techno, dubstep, jungle, DnB and of course hardcore.
